The traditional Martial Art of the Khmer is called Boxkator (ល្បុក្កតោ) and it was created during the Khmer Morn period (The Khmer Morn are the direct ancestors of the Khmer people). During that time, the Martial Art was known as Khorm Yuth. It was created more than 1000 years before Angkor period. In the Martial Art of Boxkator, there are approximately 8000 to 10000 techniques when combining the armed and unarmed portions. Before and during the Angkor period, it is this Martial Art that enabled the king and his soldiers to be very strong. During King Jayavarman VII’s reign his enemies could not threaten the country because of the superiority of the Boxkator techniques. At that time, the Khmer Empire was a great and powerful country, spanning a large territory. (Kun Khmer)

Bokator/Boxkator, or more formally, Labok Katao(ល្បុក្កតោ) (which means wielding a wooden stick to fight lions), Khmer martial art is possibly the predecessor of all Southeast Asian kickboxing styles including Muay Thai.

It is easy to believe that Bokator was the close quarter combat system used by the ancient armies of Angkor. The modern practioner of martial arts will recognise the more military style of Bokator.Angkoren Warriors will have been a key factor in enabling a succession of Angkorean Kings to dominate South East Asia for more than 600 years from 800 AD.

Bokator may have indirectly held much of the responsibility for Cambodia’s domination during that era. Popular belief is that Jayavarman VII, the ruler of the Khmer Empire, was a practitioner of Bokator. more
